TEXAS LIVING!

These two good lookin’ guys are Pete Capell and Charley Masco. I worked with both of them at Clark County, and Pete was my boss when I retired the 1st time in May of ’03. They have been in San Antonio this week for the APWA Congress. Last Saturday they had a 90 minute lay-over at DFW airport, so I took a cooler of beer over and gave them a Texas welcome! It was great seeing them and catching up on County news! OH YEA! Donna reminded me I forget to mention in an earlier posting about one of our stops on the way to Seymour this last Tuesday. Well it wasn’t exactly a planned stop! The posted Texas speed limit maximum is 70 and I had my cruise set on 77 mph. I came up behind a very pleasant Officer Plummer who took exception to my speed. He gave me a warning ticket and told me I was probably off on my speed because Donna’s 20” wheels had altered my speedometer. He thought I should get it re-calibrated - But here’s the deal. Donna’s Uncle Jim Edwards is a retired Washington State Patrolman. He once told me (about 25 years ago) that I could probably always drive 10% over the posted speed limit, with the exception of school zones and construction sites, and stay out of the inside lane on the freeway, and I’d probably never get a speeding ticket. Maybe a warning tho! I have always followed his advice and it works for me! I just didn’t feel I could share that with Officer Plummer this time if he was just giving me a warning, and was so darn nice about it. I knew my speedometer was ‘right on’! Shhh! Our secret!

Hey, no fair! I got a ticket! Granted, he did clock me at 85 (AFTER slowing down) in a 70. The officer said he did want to let me by with just a warning as I was honest with why I was speeding (a song I liked came on the radio, I'm not even late for work! I have no excuse for going so fast. Yes, that is exactly what I told him) but he had to give me a ticket. Oh well.....
