What a great trip! We just got back from Paris this afternoon around 4 p.m. Paris, Texas is about an hour and a half from Allen. We visited the Chamber of Commerce in the restored Union Train Station and picked up a map. Our first stop was the Culbertson Fountain (photo #1) in the center of the town plaza, built in 1927. Then we were off to the historic Sam Bell Maxey Home, (photo #2) originally built in 1867, and remodeled in 1911. We got lucky and received a personal one hour tour and history lesson from Kyle, the home’s curator. Sam Maxey’s West Point diploma from 1846 was on display, but there was not enough light for a non-flash photo. Darn! We thought Wade, our son and a 1998 West Point graduate would have liked to compare diplomas. After the tour we headed to the Evergreen Cemetery. The Evergreen Cemetery has been operating since September 26, 1866, and is noted not only for its many carved headstones and monuments, but for its size (approximately 18,000 people interred). The renowned Babcock monument, a twelve foot statue of "Jesus" with cowboy boots (photos #3 and #4) is a popular visitor stop. We were then off to see the Eiffel Tower replica, standing 65 feet tall. The cowboy hat was added in 1995 (photo #5 with Donna standing in front). We then drove to the other side of town to the annual chili cook-off at the local Harley Davidson dealership. We think there were over 300 bikers in town for the event. A few misc. photos (6 – 9) were taken at the event. Notice Donna standing in front of a customer 6-shooter smoker! It was a great day trip!
